Maccabees Seven; Salomona, Mother of the Seven Maccabees; Eleazar, Scribe.

Salomona and her seven sons, and their teacher, Eleazar, a chief of scribes. Jewish family who rebelled against the Syrians in 168 B.C. and were executed at Antioch. Commemorated in the Christian /drewer/calendar as martyrs.

Alexandria, Greek Patriarchate, 35, fol. 99r. Eleazar and Salomona stand behind the seven youthful Maccabees. Holding crosses. The youths do not have halos. (Ševčenko, N., Metaphrastian Menologion, p. 46, fig. 5F12).

Berlin, gr. fol. 17, fol. 188v. The miniature has been cut out. The imprint on fol. 189r shows that a tall figure (Salomona or Eleazar) stood at the left of a row of small figures. (Ševčenko, N., Metaphrastian Menologion, p. 79).

Moscow, gr. 9, fol. 136r. 1) Trial. Antiochus sits on a stool at the left. Eleazar, Salomona and five of her sons stand before him. 2) Torture, wheel. One of the Maccabees is tied to a wheel that rotates over a rack of knives. Two torturers operate ropes which turn the wheel. Another of the Maccabees, nude, lies bleeding on the ground.
