Notes

Stephan Kellner, (Nuremberg, Germany, 1812 to 1867) made this revival finely painted, stained and leaded glass window after a work by Hendrik Goltzius (16th century) titled Circumcision in the Church of St. Bravo, Haarlem.

Provenance: Private Collection, Knoxville, Tennessee The original engraving depicts a group of people attending a circumcision in a chapel in St. Bravo in Haarlem and includes a self-portrait of Goltzius standing behind the priest and looking at the viewer. It is said that as a practical joke, Goltzius removed his monogram from a print and passed it off as a Dürer. He later confessed, after it was purchased for an enormous price.

Windows by Stephan Kellner are rare to the market. A pair is held by the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
